Helicopter inspection of glaciers
This autumn, the governor flew by helicopter over glacier areas where there is a lot of traffic, especially in winter. What several glaciers have in common is that they seem to "let go" of the mountain sides, and wide and longitudinal cracks are formed.
This content is more than one year old. The information may therefore be out of date.
In October, a glacier flight was made with observers from the Governor, UNIS and the Longyearbyen Red Cross Corps. The flight schedule was:
Sassendalen – Königsbergbreen – Heuglinbreen – Petermannbreen – Potpeschnigbreen – Philippbreen – Filchnerfonna – Lomonosovfonna – Nordenskiöldbreen – Filchnerfonna – Philippbreen – Von Postbreen – Rabotbreen – Kokbreen – Slakbreen – Sjaktbreen.

The governor emphasizes that pictures and maps do not say anything about the conditions elsewhere than those mentioned. In other words, it does not mean that it is safe everywhere else.
As always, those who are out in nature on Svalbard are encouraged to take precautions and be careful. Conditions may also have changed after the overflights. Safety is the individual's responsibility.
