The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) has warned of danger level 4 for avalanches for large parts of Svalbard tomorrow, Wednesday 22 November.
A strong increase in wind will lead to large wind transport of snow into leeward mountain sides. The strong wind and fresh snow will cause avalanches to detach themselves. Medium-sized avalanches are most likely, but some avalanches can be large. People are therefore encouraged to avoid all avalanche terrain. The avalanche warning applies to the following regions: Nordenskiöld Land, Svalbard east, Svalbard west and Svalbard south. See www.varsom.no/snoskred/varsling for more information and updates.
The daily avalanche warning that NGI prepares for Longyearbyen, which applies from today 21 November at 10.00 until tomorrow 22 November at 14.00, has a low hit probability (green level).
